Naomi,
Having seen your comments in the earlier post, "[Watchdogs] Settlement,
appeal, and my personal opinion (for what
it's worth)," and then your question about PayPal, I certainly want to
respond!
First, I join Carolyn Baker in her message: "Three cheers for Naomi!" Your
analysis of the reasons for member/owner inaction is right on target, I
think, as is your evaluation of the new management team at PEC.
David Hall and I obviously share your conclusion that the settlement
agreement leaves much to be desired, and that we members should continue to
fight for a better shake.
Our goal, aside from limiting the grants of immunity and eliminating many of
the claims for PEC-related rights and benefits, is to avoid further expense
to the members. In fact, shouldn't all awards of money in the final
settlement of this case, to any person or party, for any reason, have to
come from AIG (PEC's insurer) or from the individual defendants themselves?
We members are the innocent party here. We did not ask to be included in
this case, and we had no appointed, truly independent class counsel to
represent our interests in the matter. Yet we are on the hook for $1.4
million in increased rates, which are already rising due to other factors.
As to your question about simpler methods of payment, I'll just have to beg
our contributors' indulgence. One thing about the U.S. mail is that it's
simple to use. (I could send you a stamped, Fund-addressed envelope to use
for your contribution, but that would cost us an additional 42 cents. I
suspect that PayPal would take a cut as well if we were to use that
service.)
We will appreciate anything you, and our fellow readers, can send, and if
you enclose your e-mail address, we can thank you for less. <I'm smiling, in
case you are wondering about my tone.>
The address again: Fair Settlement Appeal Fund, P.O. Box 1502, Johnson City,
Texas 78636-1502.
Thanks again for the postings!
