Dear Dale: I find that Cen-Tex Elect. Co-op is about the most straight
arrow outfit in Texas.
You will probably find that the base cause of all the foul management of PEC
goes back to lack of interest of the owner-members. Other Co-ops have the
same trouble.
You might want to check out Blue Bonnet Elect. Co-op, over in Giddings.
They have found that they cannot get a quorum required by the Board By-laws
into a meeting, once a year unless they offer prizes at the door, a raffle
of prizes and other manners of goodies. Last year, the grand prize winner
of the raffle got a tractor.
This is sad. Who is to blame? The indifference of the owners is what
caused all this mess at PEC and many other Co-ops around Texas. Mr. Garza
is taking a risk by offering only one raffle prize. Let's just hope that
member-interest and this prize will be enough to get a reasonable crowd into
the old Honky Tonk, June 20th.
At the June annual meeting of 2007, the value of the 100 raffle prizes was
[ my estimate] $5,000. There was some hooey about the grateful friends like
Ace Hardware and Walmart donating these prizes....note that no donation
amount showed up on the form 990. Some of the employees almost admitted
buying the prizes. One other factor was that about half of the folks
attending had multiple votes and multiple chances at the prizes. The
pre-meeting raffle, the door prizes, the cookies and the raffle got them in.
The attendance was about 645. Room cap. is 900. About 100 PEC personnel
were there as well.
How would like to show up on June 20th this year and there are only about 60
people on hand? The teeming crowd at the Monthly Board Meetings, aside from
the PEC mob is only about 12-20 concerned members.
So, let's not knock the give-a-ways etc. until we have very large groups of
Watchdogs and old hard-heads, concerned owners showing up. Not even this
Board would try to have a yearly meeting if only a few people show up.
Let's give them all the benefit of the doubt.
Cheers, Paul .
