Nuclear power is pitched to
Austin<http://www.statesman.com/news/local/nuclear-power-is-pitched-to-austin-1040946.html?page=2>
*From the article:*
The pitch comes as the city embarks on a plan to aggressively invest in
wind, solar and other renewable sources of energy in the hopes of reducing
Austin's dependence on fuels that many scientists say contribute to global
climate change.
"The key to this is how much they want to reduce their carbon footprint,"
Garza said. "We think they can do it more cost effectively with nuclear."
The city plans to add renewables, such as wind and solar, by reducing
reliance on a coal plant in Fayette County.
But the city can cut only so much of its reliance on Fayette, for practical
and technical reasons, according to Austin Energy — and may not be able to
buy significant amounts of nuclear and renewable energy, Spelman said.
"One of the questions we may have to answer," he said, "is whether we're
just after carbon reduction, or whether we want true renewables."
